Castle Pines Parkway / Monarch Boulevard Intersection Reconstruction

Construction at the Castle Pines Parkway and Monarch Boulevard intersection began in late August 2019. This was a major improvement project, which replaced the entire roadway and subgrade beneath the pavement at one of the highest-volume intersections in Castle Pines. A second left-turn lane from southbound Monarch Boulevard to eastbound Castle Pines Parkway was also part of the project.

Construction was  divided into 11 phases. The contractor reconstructed the four corners of the intersection before working on the inside lanes and the center of the intersection. The project was completed early 2020.

2019 Resurfacing Project Resumes
Construction at Crossing Circle and Briar Dale neighborhood begins

The 2019 Resurfacing Project delayed earlier this year due to weather, will resume this morning near the Crossing Circle and Briar Dale neighborhood.

Spring has Sprung and the weather conditions necessary for placing the final layer of asphalt on these residential streets, delayed last year, has finally arrived.

Last week, notifications were distributed in the Crossing Circle area with schedule and parking restrictions information.  In addition, digital traffic signs were placed near the entrance of the Crossing Circle and the Briar Dale communities and notifications were emailed to both communities.

Streets scheduled for construction between April 6 to 17 include Briar Dale Drive, Briar Haven Court, Briar Dale Drive and portions of Crossing Circle, which received the first layer of asphalt last fall.

Crews began working at Crossing Circle this morning and will move toward Briar Dale beginning April 6 to April 17.

The preparatory work includes roto-milling followed by placement of the final layer of asphalt. The goal is to complete everything by April 17; but as always, the schedule is based on weather.

Weather Pushes Resurfacing Plans to Spring

Due to weather conditions, placing the final layer of asphalt on several residential streets will be pushed to spring of 2020.

In order to achieve quality results, the top layer of asphalt must be placed when the ambient and ground temperatures rise above 50 degrees for most of the day. We will continue to monitor weather conditions throughout the winter for an opportunity to complete the work during temperatures that meet industry standards for placement of the top lift of asphalt.

Briar Dale Drive, Briar Haven Court, Briar Dale Drive and portions of Crossing Circle received the first layer of asphalt this fall. This first asphalt lift provides a solid plowable driving surface until the final lift can be placed this spring. Before final paving begins, residents living in the areas can expect to see a notification on their door with schedule and parking restrictions information.

This season, nine of the thirteen planned residential streets scheduled for repair were completed. All streets included in the 2019 resurfacing program are listed here. In addition to completing asphalt repairs and replacements, 1,900 lineal feet of concrete curb, gutter, sidewalk, and the installation of 117 concrete curb ramps were upgraded to conform to the current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.

Your Commute Just Got A Little Easier

Castle Pines Pkwy & Monarch Blvd Open, Turn Lane Added
Over the last four months, Castle Pines Parkway and Monarch Boulevard, the highest-volume intersection in Castle Pines, has been under construction. Construction at the intersection of Castle Pines Parkway and Monarch Boulevard is now complete!

During this time, the entire roadway and subgrade beneath the pavement were replaced and a left-turn lane was added. The second left-turn lane was added from southbound Monarch Boulevard to eastbound Castle Pines Parkway, to reduce traffic congestion and improve your commute.

Progress Update: Nov. 13, 2019

Last phase of Castle Pines Parkway / Monarch Boulevard construction planned Nov. 20 - 24

On or after Wednesday, Nov. 20, the contractor will reconstruct the last section of roadway in the center of the intersection (phases 10 & 11). Traffic impacts are anticipated during this final phase of reconstruction.  All intersection approaches will be reduced to a single lane and major delays are possible during peak hours. This traffic configuration will be in place for approximately five days with all lanes set to reopen by Sunday evening.  The following alternate routes are recommended to avoid the work zone: Buffalo Trail, Oxford Drive, Yorkshire Drive, and Monarch Boulevard south of Oxford Drive (see attached map). The schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change.

Eight of 11 project phases are finished and the project is on target for completion this month. Crews are currently replacing a section of Monarch Boulevard on the north side of the intersection. All traffic movements are open. However, drivers should expect tight turns around the work zone.

Finishing work will occur through the end of the month. Final lane striping includes a second southbound left turn lane onto eastbound Monarch Boulevard, a new traffic signal head and signal timing adjustments.

Progress Update: October 21, 2019

Six of 11 project phases are complete. When possible, the contractor will overlap or combine phases to save time and minimize travel impacts.

Yesterday, Monarch Boulevard south of Castle Pines Parkway reopened to traffic. During the Douglas County School District fall break, the contractor closed part of the Castle Pines Parkway / Monarch Boulevard intersection and reconstructed two phases of the project while traffic volumes were lower. This week, the contractor begins work on the inside lanes of Castle Pines Parkway. Drivers should continue to expect lane closures and traffic shifts. Alternate route area advised. The schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change.

Progress Update: October 10, 2019

Three of 11 project phases are complete. Work on the northeast corner (Phase 4) is underway. The project team has identified several phasing and process improvements to expedite construction. When possible, the contractor will overlap or combine phases to save time and minimize travel impacts. The City is also exploring the use of 'high-early' concrete, which cures faster than traditional concrete mixes, for some project phases.

During the Douglas County School District fall break (Oct. 12 – 20), Monarch Boulevard just south of Castle Pines Parkway will temporarily close to all traffic. The contractor intends to construct two phases of the intersection project and complete work on the south leg of Monarch Boulevard in nine days. The schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change. This section of Monarch Boulevard is narrow and would be difficult to maintain traffic on during construction. Closing the road to perform the work over fall break will impact fewer drivers, save time and benefit safety. Signed detours utilizing Oxford Drive and Yorkshire Drive will be in place from 6 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12 through Sunday, Oct. 20. Detour map.  Alternate routes are advised.

Residential Street Improvements

Thirteen residential streets are either under construction or scheduled for improvements this fall. In addition to asphalt repair or replacement, concrete curb ramps will be upgraded to meet current ADA standards. The contractor will notify each impacted residence of the anticipated schedule and parking restrictions in advance of construction.
